The Secret of the Stress Free Woman
3 secrets that can help you be stress free too
Are you good at controlling stress? Stress causes a surge of hormones in your body. When your body detects stress, a small region in the base of the brain called the hypothalamus reacts by stimulating the body to produce hormones that include adrenaline and cortisol.
These hormones help you to deal with any threats or pressure you are facing - it is called the 'fight or flight' response. These threats don’t necessarily need to be real, even if they are just perceived; your body’s response is the same.
Some people always seem able to cope with everything, they are the ones that just float through everyday life and just seem to get on with it, they are the successfully stress free women. Here are some of their secrets...
1. They build muscle...
Swedish researchers have discovered in a recent study that the more muscle you have in your body the more the muscles are able to detoxify the blood of harmful stress chemicals and protect the brain. Women with more muscle in their body are literally protecting themselves from the effects of stress. Further details of this study can be found here.
Weight lifting and resistance training is vital for building muscle. Fitness is made up of so many components; cardiovascular fitness, flexibility and strength all have equal parts to play in making your body fit and healthy. Strength, however; is so often overlooked by women. They ask “will these exercises make me bulk up? – Pumping iron builds muscle right?” The fact is that it is actually very hard for women to get big from lifting weights, you would need to be lifting some serious weight and spending a serious amount of time in the gym to be anywhere near the point where you are bulking up. In reality building resistance training into your workout will give you a toned body, muscle takes up less space than fat, making you look slimmer and leaner and the more muscle you have the more fat you burn, even when resting and the good news is that you don’t even need a gym! Muscle can easily be built by using your body weight so there are hundreds of exercises you can do in your own home to start increasing your muscle mass.
2. They eat right...
So it always comes back to the same things; diet and exercise! There is a very good reason for this; the effect stress has on the body comes down to a mix of chemicals and hormones. If you are fit, healthy and you eat a balanced diet your body will have a much better chance of balancing your hormones than if you eat lots of food that puts further stress on the body. There is a lot of conflicting information about what you should and shouldn’t eat so here is a very simple summary of how to eat well – stick to these rules and eating will become stress free!
Avoid processed food
In simple terms; everything you eat should be fresh food. By avoiding processed food you are avoiding exposure to the harmful chemicals found in foods that are heavily manufactured. Avoiding them doesn’t mean never eat them again, just make sure the majority of what you put in your mouth is fresh food rather than manufactured.
Caffeine and Alcohol
There are so many reasons why coffee has been found to have an adverse effect on the body, the main reason to reduce your caffeine intake is that it adds to the stress response by increasing cortisol (a hormone we release in response to stress) in the body and increases insulin. Your body just has more to deal with. It’s the same with alcohol; drinking alcohol also makes it harder for the body to deal with stress and stress chemicals. Reduce your caffeine and alcohol intake and you will reduce the stress hormones in your body and feel so much better.
Refined sugar and processed foods release sugar into the body too quickly. This increases the amount of insulin, which convinces our bodies to store fat rather than burn it, and alters your blood sugar levels. The more uneven your blood sugar levels are the more uneven your moods. Cortisol specifically increases your desire for comfort foods. Over several years, prolonged cortisol release leads to excessive intake of high-fat and high-sugar foods. Oh and by the way desserts spelt backwards is stressed - less sugar in your diet can only be a good thing!
