Is there more to fitness?
I have been thinking about marketing this week and how to put across what I do.
I’ve been looking at how the fitness industry presents itself and how I fit into that.
It’s not something that comes naturally to me or something I feel comfortable with.
It’s not something that feels very straightforward.
I can’t put out adverts showing ripped slim models because I don’t look like that and I’m not even sure the type of clients I want to attract actually aspire to looking like that.
Personally I would like the fitness industry to move away from the image that fitness is all about spending hours in the gym and starving yourself to look like a pre conceived idea of what is fit.
I see the value of Personal Training as far greater than just turning up at an agreed time each week to give you a thorough good workout.
For me it is all about what goes on in your head, you know all those things we run through when we are exercising or making a meal.
Am I going to be able to do this? Can I really keep going for another 30 seconds? Why did I bother signing up for this class when it just makes me feel bad? Does this sauce contain sugar? I should have made it from scratch! How will I fit in all the things I need to do today, there is no time? Do I look fat in this workout top? I wish I had worn a baggy t-shirt today. Am I going to get away with greasy hair if I go to the gym at lunchtime tomorrow? Is that woman actually staring at me right now?
Exercise and health is about a lot more than just doing a workout.
For it to truly work your head needs to be in the right place.
You need to be able to look past the negative talk.
We have all started an exercise plan and given up when we haven’t seen any results quickly enough.
Is this because we are so used to getting everything now? We order stuff on online to be here tomorrow. We can pretty much have anything we want right away and the fitness industry is no exception.
There are loads of programmes that promise you can shred in 30 days or drop a dress size in a month.
But what if you want more than that?
What if you look at your older relatives and you see their health problems and you want to do something different?
What if you know that if you change your habits you could quite simply change your life?
What if you need something that works beyond the quick fix for that big do in a month’s time?
And there is my dilemma, how do I explain in a quick concise, short snappy ad that with a little work you can change and you can make a big difference to your life?
With as much work on your mind-set as you put into a workout you could actually stick with it long enough for it to actually mean something.
But not in 30 days.
And frankly if you want to look like a fitness model you may also find working out twice a day and eating a prescribed diet a little too much to fit in around your already busy life.
So the alternative is to feel great about yourself, to eat well 80% of the time and to work out enough that your body looks and feels good.
If you can tell me how to get that across in a short snappy ad I will be your friend forever!
For now I will just have to keep trying new ways to get my message across.
